The grandparents and the Paul Dufilho family headed to the airport this morning. The grandparents are flying ahead to meet us at our next big stop: Uncle Tom's house. Paul and Bethany are finished with their part of our journey and are probably home by now tucking their babies in to their own quiet beds.
The Lagoys, true to our Slacker pattern, got a late start and spent another hour or so at Colonial Williamsburg, simply because we paid $8 extra for a multiple day pass.
We saw the Governor's Palace.
And the Magazine, where they stored the guns.
And cannons.
The Magazine is the only shop we entered this time, and only to feel like we used our multiple day pass. Check.
Then we put the kids in the stocks, which is the true reason we came back to Williamsburg, having missed it yesterday due to our slackfullness (I just invented the word slackfullness, but surely having a degree in English gives me the right to do that?!).
Then we sat in traffic on our way to meet the Nerd crew in Virginia Beach. I was really starting to wonder whether we made a mistake by spending the morning at Williamsburg. They had been at the beach already a couple hours and we were stuck in traffic. What if we didn't get there before they were ready to leave? Then I got a text from Robin: "It's cold and SUPER windy."
By the time we were close, their kids had HAD it with the cold and wind, although they managed a smile for the camera (because they are hammy like the best of us).
And, to be honest, we were not that much looking forward to a cold and windy beach experience. Matt and Andy gave two thumbs down to their morning of surfing and ended up taking the surfboards back early. Brrrrrr.
So, knowing that our plan for tomorrow is Kittyhawk...more beach...the Lagoys agreed to meet the rest of the group at a seafood restaurant instead.
We picked Margie and Rays. I have never heard of "she crab" before. We actually thought it was a typo. Like maybe the marquee was meant to say "shelled crab" but lost some letters. But, as it turns out, she crab is really a thing. Lindsay and I tried the soup and it was great.
We enjoyed some catching up time with the rest of the fam.
And the fried seafood was all around great.
Isaac drew this masterpiece of the big fish crashing into a ship and creating a large hole, and the small fish crashing into a ship and creating a larger hole. He wanted to keep it, but it was the paper tablecloth from the restaurant so I offered to take a picture and blog about it instead. Check. A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do. Remember Wood? (If not, click here.)
Then we drove to Elizabeth City, North Carolina, just to get an affordable hotel, since the ones at the beach were so expensive. I guess other people like to stay at the beach!? Who knew. Sadly, we hit major traffic again...
...this time on a tollway that we actually paid to be on. Hmmm (disapproving sound).
Abby caught some Z's.
...Until we stopped to take a North Carolina state line picture.
Then, we boarded for the night. Breaking Robin's cardinal rule of road-tripping, we selected (accidentally) a hotel with outdoor hallways. That is her sign that it is less than par. And this "Quality" Inn is indeed questionable.
The kids swam with the daddies for a while in the cold pool.
Then we served up "dinner."
Mmmm, you know you're jealous.
...Added some dessert for good measure (that's 2 Snickers bars cut into pieces).
And showed a movie...
Now we're off to bed. At the "Quality" Inn.
No, road tripping is not all glitz and glamour. Sometimes reality bites.
