A Memorial Day of Sorts

Daddy's Here!

First stop, Air and Space Museum #1.
Daddy (pointing to the Concord): "Kids, what do you think makes that white plane different than the rest?"  Abby: "It's white."

The highlight: we got to see the exact same shuttle that we saw launch back in 2010 when Isaac was 4. (Click here to see that blog post).

We also saw the Enola Gay, which dropped the atom bomb on Hiroshima.

We had the luxury of getting a ride in Aunt Cindy's van so all 3 backseat Lagoys fell asleep.

In DC, we met up with the rest of the fan for a bike tour of the monuments.

Abby opted for the "princess carriage" while the rest of the kids chose tandem bikes.

Abby rode behind Daddy.

Isaac rode behind me. I called him my slave and could be heard yelling, "pedal slave!" as we rode through the Mall area.

First stop: White House.

2nd: Washington Monument.

WWII Memorial.  Abby is here expressing shock at the huge number of American soldiers who died in the war: over 400,000.

But there was a definite lack of reverence as they played karate near the fountain.

The mood changed at the Vietnam Memorial.  The statues of the soldiers helped make the representation more real to the kids.

I was already teary-eyed and then Abby saw the nurses memorial, with a wounded soldier (no pic).  She started crying because she finally understood, which made me lose it.

We had a much lighter mood at the Lincoln Monument.

Boppa and Aubrey.

In front of the Lincoln Monument: standing on the steps where MLK said, "I have a dream."

In front of the Korean War Memorial.  Me: "Kids, don't be goofy for this picture.  You don't have to be sad, just a serious face."  Abby: "Is this a serious face?"

Mimi's dad died as a helicopter pilot during the aftermath of this war.

The new MLK Memorial.

And, finally, the Thomas Jefferson Memorial.   These words are used by some of our favorites: Lincoln and MLK.

The bike ride was my favorite activity yet and by far the best way to travel between the memorials.
