Fredericksburg Outings, part 1

On our drive up we stopped in Austin at a dog-friendly restaurant called Baker Street Pub. I tried a traditional British dish called Welsh Rarebit. Adel got fish and chips.

Once we arrived, our first outing was to Pedernales Falls

We went to the falls first, before it got too hot.

They were pretty dried out but still quite beautiful and fun to explore.

Normally all of those rocks would be covered in falls.

But right now it's just pools.

Then we went down to the river where the kids could play.

On our way out we heard this cicada and it was so loud we easily found it.

Then we explored Fredericksburg a bit.  It is a German settler's town so we went to a German restaurant for dinner.

I was the only one who got German food, some sausages, German potato salad and the only saurkraut I've ever actually liked (had bacon in it!).

Then we found an ice cream parlor.

And Abby found a way to turn herself into a lollypop.

The next day we took a day trip to Schlitterbahn, the watermark chain that has its origins in New Braunfels.   Fitting with the German heritage of this area, Schlitterbahn mean's "slide" in German.
See, I can even geek out at a water park.

The kids loved the water park, Mom and Dad less so.  Dad hates crowds, poorly designed facilities, and misleading signs...we did a lot of wandering.  Mom hates the feeling of being put in a barrel and tossed around, and fearing for the youngest child's drowning, oh, and losing her top (although briefly)  while trying to keep in arms distance with said youngest child in order to keep her from drowning. Still it was good to see the kids enjoy themselves and they were pretty worn out for the car ride home.

And we ended the day with a short visit to Old Tunnel State Park, where we watched from a distance as more than 2 million bats flew from their cave into the night sky.

This is the same picture as above, but I tried to edit it so that you could see the bats...the dark misty looking spots low in the skyline.
