On our last day we took the dogs for a walk through
Wildseed Farms which was really beautiful and charming and had enough shade to keep us from overheating.
And then we toured the
Pioneer Museum to learn about the German settlers that put Fredericksburg on the map. One of them was named Adelbert! But in German, it's pronounced like the
Edelweiss flower in the song from the Sound of Music, so of course, I started singing the song to Adel and inserting his name instead of Edelweiss. He loved that.

Then we enjoyed another German restaurant for lunch.
And some more shopping and treats.
The kids enjoyed the country drive with the windows down.
Dinner was at this local cafe that served up great burgers and was right next to Old Tunnel State Park.
After seeing the bats emerge from a distance a few days prior, we decided to head back there earlier to get the limited tickets that allow you to go down to the lower viewing platform and see them up close.
In this picture, it's hard to see the bats, but if you look closely you can see light spots against the dark of the lower trees. They started out only flying low through the trees. in a thin but constant stream.
But it wasn't long before they were flying everywhere.
The sound of their wings was like raindrops falling on an umbrella.
And their wings flapping all at one time actually created a breeze!
This clip is in slow motion and if you have a good eye you can spot the one albino bat. It's only there for a moment.
On the drive home from Fredericksburg we happened upon a local parade that was causing us to detour, so of course we stopped to watch. It was neat to see all the local princesses (the peach princess of course!).
Someone named Isaac running for public office.
And of course horses and LOTS of goodies.
That was the end to a fun family trip!
